Shortly before 4:30 Am Potsdam Police were alerted of a possible person in the water Maple Street near Sugar Creek. Potsdam PD responded and notified Potsdam Fire to respond with water rescue equipment. Potsdam PD arrived on-scene and confirmed that they had a male subject in the water under the bridge. Fire Driver Pierce responded immediately to the scene with Rescue Engine 49. Engine 49 carries a full setup of water rescue gear consisting of life jackets, cold water suits, and ropes. Potsdam PD with assistance from St Lawrence County Sheriff and NYS police had deployed a rescue disk and rescue ropes over the side of the bridge and were talking with the trapped subject. Assistant chief Perry arrived on-scene and established Potsdam command. Tower-5 and Rescue-14 were requested to the scene. Tower-5 is equipped with with parapet arms on the bucket that allow a ladder to be attached to be used below grade. Firefighter Sean Corbett donned a water rescue suit and entered the water to attempt to reach the trapped subject. The trapped person was able to grab onto the ropes and tie himself off and he was pulled up the bridge to safety. Once safely on shore the subject was questioned to be sure he was alone and that there was not anyone else in the water. Potsdam Rescue transported the subject to CPH for evaluation. All agencies that responded did an excellent job. Due to all the recent rains the water levels are high and the river is moving very fast. The outcome of this incident could have easily ended with tragic circumstances. All units cleared the scene and Potsdam Fire was back in service by 5:09 am.
