Numerous Vehicles on Fire at Walmart

On Tuesday, June 4th 2024 at 1453 hours, Potsdam Fire, Potsdam Rescue, and County Car 10 were dispatched to 7494 US Highway 11, Walmart for a reported vehicle fire. At the time of alarm, Engine 49 Chauffeured by Paid Driver Mark Maroney responded, followed shortly by Engine 80 (J. Corbett), Rescue 14 (J. Keleher), and Tanker 100 (S. Corbett). While enroute, Car 10 advised there was heavy smoke in the area and Central Dispatch advised there were several cars on fire. Engine 49 arrived on scene at 1457 hours where it was found three vehicles were on fire in the Walmart Parking Lot. 36-1 and 36-3 arrived on scene also.

Firefighters quickly deployed two handlines and placed them into operation. The fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes. Engine 80 supplied Engine 49 with water once on scene.

Firefighters, used extrication tools to access the van that was on fire and to be able to extinguish hot spots. It was determined on scene that the BMW vehicle engine compartment had caught fire then it spread to the other vehicles around. Potsdam Rescue provided standby coverage and there were no reported injuries. The New York State Police assisted on scene as well. Potsdam Fire was in service at 1630 hours.
