On Wednesday, October 23rd at 0729 hours, Potsdam Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke in the area, near 306 South Canton Road. Shortly after the time of alarm, 36-2 (Asst. Chief McGregor) was enroute to the scene. While responding, he requested the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office to respond with their drone. At 0737, Engine 80 and Rescue 14 responded. As personnel arrived on scene, it was determined that there was approximately 5 acres burning in the woods.
At 0739 hours, 36-2 established Potsdam Command and canceled the Sheriff’s with their drone and requested Canton Fire with their UTV and manpower, along with manpower from Hannawa Falls Fire, and West Potsdam Fire. Engine 80 and Rescue 14 arrived on scene at 0749 hours, and members began to make their way back into the woods. At 0806 hours, 36-2 requested West Stockholm Fire Department to respond with their brush truck and manpower as well as Parishville Fire Department with their UTV and manpower. Shortly after, 36-2 requested the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers to respond to the scene.
Potsdam Vol. Rescue Squad responded to the scene to provide EMS stand-by and Firefighter Rehab. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. 35 Fire department personnel worked for approximately three and a half hours to bring the fire under control, using three UTVs, one brush truck and approximately 1,800 gallons of water. Potsdam Fire responded with Engine 80, Rescue 14, Rescue 30, Tanker 100 and 14 members.
Potsdam Fire was also assisted on scene By County Car 10 (R. Pierce) and County Car 36 (B. Sullivan) Potsdam Fire was back in service at 1200. |
